National Lottery to join +$1bn Powerball on 21 July
The Powerball Jackpot is set to make its UK debut on 21 July, marking the first time that the iconic lottery draw is made available outside of the United States.
Subject to final regulatory approval, National Lottery steward Allwyn UK will begin selling £4 Powerball tickets through the National Lottery’s retail network, website and app, with UK players eligible to enter the first draw on 23 July.
Powerball has become synonymous with generating world record-breaking jackpots, producing seven prizes worth more than $1bn since its inception in 1988, including the world’s largest lottery jackpot of $2.04bn won in California in 2022.
The launch represents the latest milestone in Allwyn’s modernisation of The National Lottery for the benefit of good causes and the general public, and follows a year of major operational upgrades to its sales and ticket purchasing system.
Throughout 2025, the operator completed the nationwide replacement of The National Lottery’s retail sales terminals while expanding point-of-sale distribution through innovation-led partnerships with Aldi, GoPuff and mobile technology partner Vodafone, as part of a wider strategy to modernise and extend the lottery’s retail network.
UK joins Powerball network
Powerball will be introduced to UK players via a partnership with the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), enabling audiences to participate in the same jackpot as players across 48 participating US lotteries.
Jackpots will start at £12m and are uncapped, meaning prizes can grow into the hundreds of millions and, in exceptional circumstances, exceed £1bn.
UK jackpot winners will receive the top prize across a timeframe of 30 years, in line with the game’s US annuity structure.
The UK version will also include exclusive prize tiers. Matching two main numbers will win a fixed £8 prize, available only to UK players, while matching five main numbers will return a guaranteed £1m.
All remaining prize tiers will vary, depending on the numbers drawn and the number of winners in each draw.
Players will select five main numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26, or choose a Lucky Dip. Draws will take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, with tickets available until 11:55pm UK on the evening before each draw. The draws themselves will be conducted from the Powerball studio in Florida at approximately 4am UK time.
Should the current jackpot continue to roll over, UK players could enter the inaugural draw with an estimated top prize of around $416m.
Rebecca Paul, President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery and former President of the World Lottery Association (WLA), welcomed UK players: “This next step brings us closer to a thrilling milestone for Powerball. More players means faster-growing jackpots, more excitement and even greater impact for the communities we serve.”
Powerball to net £1bn for UK causes
Alongside its record-breaking jackpots, Allwyn expects Powerball to make a significant contribution to National Lottery funding.
Dealmakers forecasts the game will generate around £1bn for UK Good Causes during its first five years, with all proceeds from UK ticket sales remaining dedicated to UK beneficiaries and community projects – as the primary mandate of Allwyn as steward of the National Lottery
Andria Vidler, CEO of Allwyn UK, said: “We’re excited to give National Lottery players the chance to dream bigger, while supporting thousands of Good Cause projects across the UK every week. Powerball jackpots can soar into the billions, offering breath-taking sums with the potential to transform lives and communities.
“As we begin the countdown to the first draw later this month, you won’t be able to miss Powerball’s arrival with a major launch lined up. We’re encouraging players to get involved when tickets go on sale, and we’ll be crossing our fingers for our first UK winner.”
