Google makes Gemini 3 the default on AI Overviews
Google is making Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally.
The move comes as part of a series of upgrades designed to make search seamless. It means users can get an AI response within the search results page.
The tech giant is also making the transition to a more conversational engine by offering the ability for users to ask follow-up questions from an AI Overview. Essentially, this will enable users to jump into a conversational back and forth with AI Mode.
Robby Stein, VP of Product, Google search, wrote in a blogpost: “Our vision for search is to make it effortless to explore, access and understand information.
“[…] In our testing, we’ve found that people prefer an experience that flows naturally into a conversation – and that asking follow-up questions while keeping the context from AI Overviews makes search more helpful.
“It’s one fluid experience with prominent links to continue exploring: a quick snapshot when you need it, and deeper conversation when you want it.”
The upgrade will see Google align itself with its competitors including OpenAI’s Atlas browser, launched last year, which seamlessly integrates search with ChatGPT.
For affiliates, this puts a focus on the move towards generative engine optimisation (GEO) over traditional SEO.
